Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning to read at age 5 can be quite challenging, but learning to read in a language that you do not yet understand is a whole other story. Through this project, my students will be able to use technology to help them develop and strengthen English oral language skills and so much more.
I teach kindergarten at a title one school where about 80% our incoming kindergarteners do not speak English as their first language, and many do not speak English at all.
Almost all of our students and families are living in poverty and are on free and reduced lunch. For many of our students, their first day of kindergarten is the first day they have ever set foot in a classroom setting. Teaching them how to speak and understand English while at the same time teaching them to read and write in English can be quite a challenge.
My Project
Unfortunately, due to outdated security software, all student computers were removed from the classrooms at our school this past June. Sadly, there has been no money in the budget to replace them at this time. (We are still hopeful) Not having computers in the classroom puts our students at a huge disadvantage. This project will provide my students with the opportunity to learn through technology. My ELLs (English Language Learners) will be able to use the Rosetta Stone English Course on this laptop. This program not only teaches English oral language, but beginning reading and writing skills in English as well. All of my students will be able to use this computer to learn basic computer skills and typing. They will also be able to strengthen reading skills using programs such as ImagineLearning and Reading Rabbit as well as websites such as Starfall.com, Abcmouse.com, and pbskids.com. The possibilities are truly endless.
Please consider making a donation to help fund this project for my students.
Your donation will help build a solid academic foundation for so many students this year, and for many years to come.
