Have you ever been immersed in a culture that speaks a language unknown to you? Do you know what it feels like to accomplish a task when you can't understand the instructions?
Our school serves 400+ students of which 97% are living in high poverty.
Of our very diverse population, English is not the first language for 127 students. For those kids, classroom learning has become so much more difficult than that of the average elementary student.
We want to help these kids get the best education our public school system can offer! Not only are they living in a district suffering the fallout of an economic downturn, these students are trying desperately to learn despite an enormous language barrier. I have requested Rosetta Stone, a computer assisted language learning program that helps interactively support their need to develop new language skills. Using this computer program is one ways I hope to help surround and immerse them in their new language during their school day.
The foundation of our country was built on the ideals of equality, perseverance and acceptance.
These students have already shown great determination and deserve the materials that will give them an equal chance to succeed. Let's give these kids a chance to learn!
