I have the pleasure of teaching 21 first graders in Massachusetts. I teach in the city of Brockton, which is an urban low-income area. My students are in a dual language program, which means they spend half the day learning English and the other half of the day learning a target language (Portuguese). Many of my students are also English Language Learners. So not only are these students learning two languages at the same time, which can be challenging, English was not their first language.
My first grade dual language students are learning two languages at the same time (English and Portuguese). Therefore, language and vocabulary are key components in our everyday learning. These language activities will help my students practice and reinforce key vocabulary. Since most of the activities contain just picture cards, they can be used in the classroom during English or Portuguese instruction.
Oral language provides the foundation for literacy development.
My students will be able to build their oral language skills by working together in small groups to communicate with each other on how to sort the pictures into the correct categories.
