I am a speech-language pathologist and I love working with a diverse group of students with many different communication needs. Students work toward mastery of articulation, language, fluency, and/or voice skills to improve their communication in the classroom and in social settings. My students use drill-based exercises and oral motor manipulation to improve their speech sound productions. I enjoy using board games and interactive virtual activities to increase student motivation and interest. Sometimes students are asked to repeat their sound 5x and then move a piece on a game board. Other times we work hard for the entire session and leave 1 minute at the end to play a game that reinforces their speech skill (memory/concentration with speech sound cards) or another fun activity to end on a positive note and celebrate their hard work.
I work with students PreK through 5th grade and this diverse group requires a range of resources and materials.
Although we don't have a preschool program at my school site, I do evaluate and provide services for 3-4-year-olds who meet the district criteria for speech-language impairment who are zoned for my school.
My Project
Young students develop early language skills through imaginary play. The kitchen and grocery store can be used to develop role playing, conversation skills, and practice articulation.
Due to remote learning last year students missed out on participation in hands on, guided role playing.
Speech Pathologist will use these tools to teach kids to speak in complete sentences, make eye contact, and socialize with others. They have fun while using these materials and enjoy interacting with others and learning at the same time.
Students also tend to lack imaginary and problem solving skills if they spend too much time on video games and other media.
