Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you know that there are nearly one million words in the English vocabulary? This includes multiple meaning words, inflections, prefixes, suffixes, and word tenses. Building vocabulary skills improves reading comprehension and reading fluency. Without building a large vocabulary, students cannot read successfully.
Our school is a Title 1, Program Improvement school that serves a low socio-economic area.
Many of my students entered fifth grade at least 1-2 years below grade level in both reading and writing, and many of them are English language learners. One of the major issues I'm seeing is that they have extremely limited vocabularies. A lack of literacy-rich home environments compounds the deficiency, so it's my task to find every opportunity to expand their vocabularies and help them to find a love for reading.
My Project
An enriched vocabulary is essential for success in reading, writing, and speaking, the core components of any balanced literacy program. As they build their personal vocabularies, my students will become more confident readers. Through the use of these vocabulary activities, they will gain a deeper understanding of the origins, meanings, and usage of words. The end result will be improved reading comprehension, refined writing skills, and more confident self expression.
Student engagement is one the keys to high student achievement.
These vocabulary games and activities will engage my students in meaningful vocabulary skill development on a daily basis. Building vocabulary while having fun. Learning doesn't get any better than that!
