Help me give my students language and literacy activities to increase their ability to read independently. Items such as the Instant Learning Centers will challenge students to increase their knowledge of letters, letter sounds, phonics, and sight words.
Reading is FUNdamental! This year I've made the switch from teaching 4th grade to Kindergarten. While it was a big change at first, I've realized Kindergartners LOVE to learn! Watching my students become independent readers has been a life-changing journey to watch unfold.
Our school district serves a student population that faces extreme economic and personal hardships, and over 80% of our students qualify for the free breakfast/lunch program.
Many of my students have witnessed or experience traumatic events in their home life, and that can be a huge obstacle to overcome. I hope to create a learning-rich environment that not only inspires them to want to learn, but also makes them feel safe everyday.
Kindergarten students are eager, inquisitive, and inspired by their environment and surroundings. I hope to create a literacy and language-filled classroom to support them on their journey to becoming independent readers.
My Project
My Kindergartners are bright and energetic learners that are working hard to become independent readers. Our daily work consists of reading as a class, reading together with the teacher, and working on independent language and literacy activities. The independent activities allow students to extend and build upon topics we have covered together as a class. In switching from 4th grade to Kindergarten, I had no centers and activities for the Kindergarten grade level. Most of what my students use during this time is printed and laminated using my personal funds and time.
The Lakeshore language and literacy centers in this project will provide students with new materials to make their center time more exciting.
These materials are well-constructed and will provide students with new and interesting ways to learn essential language and literacy skills for years to come.
Students will be excited to take a center to their table and complete their activity independently. Building independence is a much-needed skill to increase students' confidence in their reading abilities. Seeing the excitement on their faces when they get to choose a center to work with is something I look forward to!
