"Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn." -O. Fred Donaldson
Despite the daily challenges of our special needs, language barriers, and behavior issues, my pre-kindergarten classroom is always full of play and learning.
My students are incredibly unique and represent a large variety of cultures and backgrounds.
There are four different languages spoken by the students in my classroom, including Burmese, Lhao Vo, Spanish, and English. The students in my early childhood classroom come from low-income/poverty stricken homes or qualify as a special education student. Despite the challenges my students are forced to face, they are some of the happiest children I have ever met. However, these children are labeled "At Risk," for a reason and unfortunately attending school in an Urban district means that don't always have access to the best learning resources to promote their learning. Many of my students are in the beginning stages of learning English and in order to be ready for kindergarten I would like to be able to provide them with the best resources possible to help engage them in learning the required language and literacy skills needed to be kindergarten ready.
My Project
I'm requesting materials that will help enrich my classroom's literacy centers and small group lessons. The best way for children to learn is through hands on, engaging activities and provided the funds, I would be able to incorporate hands on activities that will help my students grow in their language and literacy skills and better prepare them for kindergarten. I would like to have a listening center in my classroom that would allow children to work independently and listen to stories being read to them as they follow along and begin recognizing and becoming familiar with text and it's meaning. I would also like play dough for my students who are struggling with developing their fine motor skills so they can work on building those muscles in their hands and eventually begin to start writing. Finally, I have requested materials such as the phonemic awareness file folder games which students can engage socially through play during center time.
The children I serve have a very special place in my heart and have given me a passion for paving a positive path for their futures.
I want to be able to provide my students with the proper materials that will support their development and prepare them for kindergarten. As a former Kindergarten teacher in this district, I can say that the children that come in with the proper early childhood education succeed far beyond the standards and expectations and I would love for my students to sore!
