This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are eager to come to my speech room and work. Each student has their own individual goals, and it is my job to help my students achieve their goals and become the best communicators they can be! Our school is in a large metropolis with many of the challenges facing other cities this size.
I am a Speech and Language Therapist who works K-3 through 12th grade at a high poverty Montessori urban high school.
My students would benefit from having a warm, safe, and comfortable environment. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and, therefore, exhibit unique needs. But all students could greatly benefit from learning and incorporating new skills to cope with emotions, stress, and dysregulation daily. These important tools will provide my students opportunity to learn self-regulation skills.
My Project
Language and Literacy are all around us. To develop language in students with deficits it is important to have materials that give them "something to talk about." It is essential to have a variety of items that entice and motivate students to learn language skills that they are not naturally acquiring like their same-aged peers. Worksheets just don't cut it!
We need hands-on activities that will encourage communication within activities that support literacy.
My students need manipulatives that provide a concrete visual representation of what needs to be said. Therefore, I am requesting items that my students can hold onto while retelling a story verbally, pictures to sequence, and magnetic manipulatives to encourage my students to increase their sentence length while re-telling stories. These materials (a literacy center, language rods, story sequencing cards, dot art painters, and storage supplies) make language concrete and possible for my students! My students of all ages will use the selected resources to build their language skills within print-rich environment.
