Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over 50% of our students are living below the poverty level. Our students speak more than 46 languages on campus on any given day. The majority of our students are enthusiastic English Language Learners who are eager to learn and speak English at a proficient level.
Located near Disneyland, we are a large urban high school in California where school budgets for art have been slashed.
We are very thankful for the support Disney has given us in the past for the arts.
Most of our students have never been to a museum. Hopefully our students will become life long learners and return to the museum with their families for years to come. Our art students would like to visit the Orange County Museum of art for the Landscape into Abstraction exhibit. We will then head over to the Murth Interpretive Center for an outdoor lunch and plen aire sketching session on the backbay. When we return to the classroom, our sketches will be transformed into paintings, inspired by those we view at the museum.
My Project
An informal survey of our art students shows that 90% of them have never been to an art museum. Their parents are without resources and are often working 2 jobs at night and weekends. This is a first time experience that will foster a lifetime of museum experiences for the student and their family.
Our visit to the museum to see the show Landscape into Abstraction will be followed by a stop at the Murth Interpretive Nature Center and an out door lunch. We will spend about an hour plen air sketching before returning to the school. The funding we are looking for is the cost of the transportation cost of driver & bus for 5.5 hours.
This project demands creative and critical thinking to come up with an original drawing and final painting.
This finished project will become a portfolio piece for those students seeking scholarships, college entrance or admission into a juried student art show. Ca. State Standards 5. Connections, Relationships and Applications.
