We are a high-need, urban 6th-8th-grade school in Boston. My students have both physical and intellectual impairments. They are loving, responsible, and always inquisitive. Because of their differences, they have to find creative ways to access the curriculum. They have to find ways to learn that are different from others because it is not always easy for them to access the curriculum in the same way as the rest of the school. My students do this by using different types of materials and interacting with them using all their senses, not just completing worksheets and listening to a lecture.
All of my students persevere every day to learn and prepare themselves for a successful adult life.
My Project
Many of my students do not write using a pencil and paper. Instead, they require materials they can manipulate. I make activities for all subject areas including math, writing, reading, science, and life skills. Laminating materials allows them to last for many years and to use them for more than one student.
My students' favorite activities are task boxes.
These are small boxes that have one skill-based activity inside (ex. determining place value using pictures of base ten blocks, sorting parts of speech, matching sight words, etc.). They love task boxes because they are able to do them independently. This builds confidence and helps them realize they do not need to rely on adults. In addition to task boxes, my students also enjoy interactive books, file folder games, and more! Because each activity is laminated, they are accessible to ALL of my students.
This laminator and laminating pouches will allow me to make more standards-based, accessible curriculum for my incredible students!
