Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are newcomers from over 30 different countries around the world: many of them have fled ethnic persecution, dire poverty, or war to find a better life here in Oakland, CA. The large majority of our students (95%) qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Many struggle with the after-effects of trauma they experienced before, during, and after the immigration process. Our students are resilient and wise, goofy and kind, and we are so proud of the progress they make each year in learning English and charting a path towards a better future for themselves and their families.
In boating class many kids experience success for the first time in a long time because of the trauma they have been exposed to.
My Project
This project introduces immigrant students to boating in the inner city of Oakland. Students learn about water safety and how to pick and wear a life jacket. They learn what to do if they fall into the lake and how to call for help and wait calmly in the water. They are taught how to paddle a paddle boat and a kayak, and how to row a canoe and a dragon boat safely.
This activity provides students physical exercise, on an individual and a group setting using cooperative skills in dragon boats and canoes and individual emphasis when kayaking alone.
