Located in North Central Montana, our school serves a rural area with population of 150 students from a town of around 1400 people. Our schools are a big presence in our small town, and we are very proud of the school system and all the people involved with our school--including our children. They are a special group of promising young minds whom I am privileged to spend my days with. It is my goal to help provide my students with a strong and positive academic foundation.
Our rural area has very strong agricultural ties which provide our children with unique knowledge, abilities, and lessons to learn.
There are also many challenges coming from this type of location. I hope to blend and build upon the pros and cons to create well balanced and informed students who can go forth in their education and life with confidence and positivity.
My Project
"Bugs" are a common topic of conversation here. Most of the time, the discussion leads to a negative outlook. My students need to learn about the positive impact a "bug" can have. They also need to be exposed to the realization that the bugs they think they know, don't always look like that!
My second graders are going to observe the transformation of ladybugs as the creatures advance through the stages of metamorphosis.
We will be using Ladybug Land habitats to observe as the process advances. In addition to the viewing area the kits provide, the children will be able to use a specialized bug magnifying glass to take a closer look at the ladybug.
In addition to the observation, we will be creating informational posters, journals, and stories as the time passes. The poster and hands on models of the stages of metamorphosis are a visual aspect adding to our information. The books to accompany our ladybug journey are both fiction and nonfiction to help us better understand the metamorphosis process, the ladybug in general, and provide us entertainment and good strong story examples to use in our own personal writing and illustrations.
