Our students come to school excited to learn about and explore their world every day! However, back in August, many of our students and staff were exposed to a world they've never seen. Our community slowly began to disappear. First, the streets began to disappear, then the bottoms of our homes and businesses, our fields (along with the animals in them) and then finally when the rivers could hold no more, much of our town. Yes, Hurricane Harvey impacted many of our lives, some to the point of total destruction. Our families are continuing to rebuild and replace, but some things are lost forever. You wouldn't know the loss by the kiddos' bright and shining faces you see each day, or the perseverance they show, or the kindness and friendship they pour from their hearts. You would only know by the stories they tell.
My Project
Do you know what makes our school the best place in the world? Other than the rock star teachers and creative little learners, it's the community that surrounds us. It's our classroom community, our school community and our small little community where we all live and support each other from everything between droughts and floods! This brings me to the very reason we need a working portable public address (PA) system. Each month, our students invite the community in for special events such as flag-raising ceremonies where our veterans and families attend and are honored each month. Other special events are our student recognition breakfasts where students who have been nominated for outstanding character traits and honored and enjoy a breakfast with their parents. In addition, our students perform programs based on current studies for the community. A working PA system would also make our morning announcements audible to the whole school...yes, our students meet in the gym each morning and all students take turns delivering the morning greeting, pledges, reading/math achievements and other daily announcements...all students, including my own little 5-year-olds with their teeny little voices.
