Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help inspire, create, and educate young mathematicians and scientists! I am a second-grade teacher in Texas, teaching in one of the most disadvantaged elementary schools in an inner-city district. Many of the students at my school are living below the poverty line, and to add to the obstacles they already face, many do not speak English as a first language.
My students need a lot of help in all subject areas, and research has shown that integrating the different school subjects and teaching math and science through literature is an extremely effective tool for investing students with varying interests in every lesson. In addition, many students, especially boys, prefer reading non-fiction books about science, math, or social studies, but with the heavy focus on fiction and narrative stories, these needs are not met, resulting in students' increasing dissatisfaction with and disconnection from reading and the school environment as a whole.
Because most of the books available to my students are fictional stories, I am not able to support my students' wide range of interests. With the addition of a math and science library, not only will I be able to integrate my math, science, and reading curricula, but I will also be able to draw in disengaged students who don't want to read the same old fairy tales and narrative stories. The addition of this library will also create added opportunities for cross-curricular projects that combine reading, writing, math, and science skills and ensure that all students are able to succeed in these areas.
