Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at my school are considered true inner city kids. Though they come from a challenging neighborhood that has experienced over 25 people being shot just over the summer, including two of our own students, their hearts and curiosity is what makes them special.
A full 100% of students at my school are eligible for free and reduced price lunch, and our school has recently eliminated extracurricular activities due to budget cuts.
This is why it is important for me to incorporate fun and engaging activities that can keep students engaged and wanting to learn about science. Because most of my students read at a fourth grade level and require constant stimulus, I have to constantly think of ways to get them engaged.
Apart the academic support, my students require a lot of emotional support. They need to be reminded that people believe in them and that their school and the city they live in is not the only thing determining their future. They need their eyes to be opened to the possibilities of their future.
My Project
All the materials I am requesting are to be used for science activities and labs that align with our curriculum content. Our school barely gives 2 reams of paper per half a year, so these supplies are basic necessities. Having engaging labs such as the yeast lab, bacterial growth lab and making our own ecosystem will allow my students to make science part of their world. My classroom barely has any functioning microscopes, so a microscope imager will help the whole class see life under the microscope. Poster paper and play dough will allow them to make their own cells and engage in gallery walks for the kinetic learners. Since I also teach STEM lab in addition to biology, having team building activities using wooden blocks to learn engineering practices will allow them to explore other parts of science.
