I have a great group of science-loving students that are motivated and ready to start thinking like scientists.
Our school is located in an urban setting and attracts a diverse student body all over the local area.
These students come from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds,we have a large ELL population that we try to provide with an equitable and a rigorous educational experience. While the student body is quite diverse but one thing is universal among these kids, they love technology. Lab tools that were normally too expensive and required advanced understanding to operate have been made accessible to the high school class room. Despite a wide range of skills and interests, one thing all my students seem to love is learning to use new tech tools. Combining new tech with lab coats is a guaranteed engaging science activity. Collecting observational data is good, but quantitative data is better and being able to graphically represent data as it is being collected in real time is the best! I would like to use modern data probes technology in my classroom to allow students to do the work of a scientist.
My Project
My students regularly perform investigations in the chemistry lab. We recently added a lot of technology into the students hands. Each student has their own Chromebook. I would like to make the most of this new tech by getting some wireless lab equipment that will interface with our Chromebooks.
I know students will be more engaged if they get to use authentic modern tools like these wireless sensors to collect their data.
As our school district moves toward adopting the 3 Dimensional teaching model, cross cutting concepts are going to be essential lesson components. These instruments will be great way to incorporate multiple cross cutting concepts into our lab activities.
