Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I understand this now!" Nothing makes me happier than hearing my students say that statement. It is what drives me as a teacher. My students come from diverse backgrounds and interests, but the common thread with all of them is that they have an interest and a passion for science.
I am fortunate to have a variety of chemistry students, from those that are fulfilling a graduation requirement in Chemistry, my pre-IB Chemistry students preparing for their IB diploma program, and my AP Chemistry students who are passionate about science and want to experience more science classes.
For my chemistry and pre-IB chemistry students, this is their first exposure to chemistry, and I want to foster, encourage, and support an interest in the topic. My AP Chemistry students are students who have taken chemistry previously and have decided that it is a subject they want to continue to pursue and investigate further.
It is my goal to create a classroom that supports and fosters a love of science in my classroom through the utilization of technology, literary works, science equipment, and materials that embrace a supportive classroom community.
My Project
I love to do science experiments with my students, as do all of the other teachers in our science department. Good labs require planning, preparation, and set up. Our department is spread out over two stories of our building, with our stock room and equipment room on the second story floor. This has made transporting supplies and chemicals to our rooms difficult.
We need these carts and trays so that all of the teachers in our department can safely transport and organize the science experiments that we diligently plan and prepare for our students.
Without these carts, there is not a safe, easy, and efficient way for all teachers to get supplies and chemicals to our respective rooms. Currently, we all share the few carts we have, and sometimes we have to wait several days for one to become available, impacting the timing and frequency of the labs we all can do. The trays will the students and myself make sure the lab area is organized, clean, and safe.
