Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school in Shelltown, San Diego; part of the Lincoln Cluster. This year, I am engaging students through science, technology, and engineering practices to help them view themselves as scientists, to develop their inquiry and critical thinking skills, to support academic research, evaluation, and analysis, and to support skills through the scientific method and programming. Additionally, we are working to become global thinkers, lifelong learners, and collaborators.
I am developing a classroom and workspace that supports STEM practices, engaging students in hands-on activities, research, projects, and labs that support critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication.
I am also working to develop and coordinate opportunities for students outside of the school and classroom, to extend what happens in school to home and beyond. Every opportunity, every minute, every resource counts.

My Project
This year, my students will be participating in expanded opportunities to conduct chemistry in our science class, and we need aprons. We have reviewed the rules for lab safety, and in order to comply with best lab safety practices, I want to encourage students not only to wear protective eye goggles, but also to wear lab aprons to protect our clothing and bodies from splashes and spills. Providing students with these washable lab aprons would help to ensure that even our youngest chemists are adhering to best practices and preparing for higher-level science activities beyond these formative elementary school years.
