At the end of every school year I envision each student to have a better understanding of who they are and where they come from. The biggest challenge in getting them there is not having enough resources in letting that child explore their own identity.
Our school is made up of students K-8 that live in the Nanakuli-Waianae area.
The enitre Waianae Coast is a low socioeconomic area. Even though our students come from this type of background, they are some of the most loving and hardest working students you could ask for. As a school, we have three tenets of learning that we try to incorporate into our students. The tenets are academic, social, and cultural tenets with each tenets having an important part of the student's education here at Ka Waihona. As the Papa Hula teacher it is my duty to instill a strong cultural foundation into these students through mele(song), hula(dance), and mo`olelo(stories).
My Project
My students will be able to actively do extensive research on these iPads to help them learn more about their culture, the land they come from, the people of old, as well as individuals who have a great impact on our La Hui(Hawaiian Race.) The iPads will further enhace the type of research that I would be able to offer to my students. As the Cultural teacher, dancing is taught in my class, our students will be able to use these iPads to record themselves and help groom themselves to become better dancers. These iPads will give them the opportunity to understand their sense of place within the community.
I want these students to be able to become better individuals for our community.
I want to groom them and use them as examples for the younger generation. I want them to serve as role models and leaders. I am hoping that through a stronger sense of culture and a better understanding of themself and where they come from, they will be able to give back to the community.
