Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an occupational therapist who works with a small population of the school on a regular basis. In my therapy room, I provide strategies and supports to children that assist with increasing fine motor skills, gross motor skills, visual motor skills, daily life skills, and self-regulation skills. A large amount of my time is also dedicated to providing sensory supports and intervention for students that have difficulty within the school setting. Students love coming to OT sessions, as it is a space for their body and minds to reset and make strides in improving their individualized goals.
My hopes are that all children in the school will be able to experience OT in some way throughout their day.
Students specifically in occupational therapy sessions are often seen for extra support with diagnoses including (but not limited to) developmental delays, Autism, ADD/ADHD, Anxiety, Dyslexia, and more. Many kids benefit from OT to help organize their body and take sensory breaks throughout the day to allow them to be more successful in their learning.
My Project
These sensory tools will be provided to the students oh KT Murphy to help address sensory over-stimulation and increase attention and focus in the classroom. It will also provide opportunities for students to take breaks out side of the classroom.
Sensory pathways will be placed along the floors and walls of the PreK and Kindergarten wing and wiggle seat cushions will be provided to teachers to support their students learning both in whole group lessons on the carpet and individual work time seated at the table.
It will allow teachers and supporting staff to help give support in the area of need without individualizing children and increasing independence / self-regulation skills to take breaks outside of the classroom.
