Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The kiddos in my class are bilingual babies who have so much to teach and learn. We are 21 kiddos from diverse backgrounds, but are all from Hispanic families and speak Spanish as our first language. We are in a bilingual class to learn Spanish first, and then transition to English through our new and improved Dual-Language classroom. Our new teacher, Ms. Keen, started in January and she is so excited to get us started!
We are hard working students, and we also have very hard working families.
Many of us have limited support at home, parents who work full time and split schedules, and we all qualify for free or reduced lunch based on family income levels. Overall, only about 25% of our class is reading at or above grade level, and there is a need for us to shift to personalized groups so that our teacher can focus her instruction to provide us with reading and math support all day. We are a vibrant, energetic, beautiful group of students and we can't wait to show you how much we grow in the next five months.
My Project
The resources we are requesting for this project are all centered around a major goal for our school and classroom; student ownership, voice, and choice. We are working hard to self-select where we learn best, and that isn't the same for all of us. We like to MOVE in Ms. Keen's class, which means our furniture should, too! The flexible seating options both on the floor and the stools to sit at each desk are going to help us focus on our learning; with the teacher or on our own. Our headphones will help us stay on task with our independent learning time, and we won't be distracted by each other or by asking our teacher for help to fix our earbuds.
We are learning to become independent and make our own choices-- si se puede!
While we do that, these materials will make our classroom reflect those goals. That, in turn, will make us grow our brains and reach our highest potential. We will be reading, writing, and soaring in math by the end of this year!
