Help me give my students a set of KP Ten Frame tiles which are by far the best tool for truly understanding place value concepts and operations with whole numbers and decimals.
I work with middle school students. Many of them have worked hard at math, but have been unsuccessful. They have gaps from previous skills (as low as 3rd and 4th grade) because they really need concrete and visual ways of experiencing important math concepts.
My students light up when they understand a math concept that they struggled with before, because they were now given a chance to work on it with concrete manipulatives.
Their self-esteem and their confidence level in their math abilities are strengthened with every such positive learning experience. They could sure use this boost as they prepare for high school!
My Project
KP Ten Frame Tiles help students learn 1st through 4th grade math skills by directly aiding students in their conceptual understanding of specific standards. They are very helpful for older students who need extra support in place value related math concepts.
The KP Ten Frame Tiles have several advantages over the traditional base 10 blocks.
With KP Ten Frame Tiles students can experience in a concrete way that 10 ones can be grouped into 1 ten and then they can ungroup them without having to "trade in" pieces. Another great advantage of the KP Ten Frame Tiles is that the ten and hundred groups are put together in a ten-frame format, which allows students to strengthen their counting skills both by 2s and by 5s. When students lack either of these basic counting skills, it greatly hinders their development of number sense, which affects their success in higher level math skills. Yet another specific advantage of the KP Ten Frame Tiles is when we introduce decimals. Students can see tenths and hundredths in a much more concrete way than with traditional base 10 blocks.
