I teach at a Title I school in a small rural community in Northwest Missouri. I currently have 13 students. Our school district has a 60% free and reduced lunch student population and many students depend on our back pack buddy program for their meals on the weekends. Many of my students live with someone other than their biological parents (foster family, grandparents, aunts/uncles, etc.). All of this means that our students are struggling every day in many ways, emotionally and physically.
Despite the many hardships my students face they are always eager to learn and they find joy in coming to school, a place where they can feel loved and wanted, to learn and be with their friends!
I want to provide a comfortable place where they can do their best learning in a learning position where they are most comfortable. Some students simply do not do their best when they are made to sit in a regular desk and chair. They need a little wiggle room!
My Project
My kindergarten classroom is a place where my students come to learn but also to feel safe, loved, comfortable and wanted. Many of my students struggle with attention issues and behavior challenges and need a comfortable and flexible place to learn.
By providing flexible seating options for my students we can help them build a love for learning in a comfortable setting.
Often my students are unable to sit still and focus in a traditional classroom setting with tables/desks and chairs. These balance balls, pillows, rug, bean bags, and jelly fish seats will help those students who find it hard to focus in traditional seating options. By providing students with flexible seating choices we can reduce distracting behaviors and create a positive environment for learning. I strive to instill a love of learning at an early age!
