Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Having to navigate through a technological society without the knowledge to do so can be quite a challenge.
My students have limited experience with technology.
Most of them come from socioeconomically disadvantaged homes were a computer is a luxury. My challenge is to expose them to technology and build their knowledge base so that they can compete with their peers.
My students are overwhelmingly Hispanic, many of which are learning English for the first time. Most come from under-privileged homes and have entered school without the necessary skills to excel early on. They are hard workers, and as such, have begun to close the gap with their more fortunate peers.
They are sweet, kind, helpful, funny and eager to learn.
My Project
If we had a laptop computer, I could connect it to my LCD projector and project images, websites, videos, and any other available information that would bring lessons to life. My students will have a better understanding of the concepts they're learning when they can see the how and why things work. We would also use it to research different topics that we are learning about during each of our unit topics.
As stated earlier, my students come from socioeconomically disadvantaged homes. Educators need to take advantage of every opportunity to "level the playing field." A laptop computer would be one very important step in doing just that. My students would very much appreciate it.
My project for a laptop computer is important because as educators we are constantly trying to close the achievement gap.
One way of doing so is by arming our students with as much knowledge on technology as possible. It improves the likelihood that they'll go on to higher education and have a successful life.
