Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what it was like to have little or no experience using technology in the 21st century? My students do not have the opportunity to use a laptop or computer to explore a topic in depth because we do not have one in the classroom.
I teach 23 intelligent second graders that are willing to learn if they are inspired.
Our school is located in the center of a housing project in Los Angeles in Southern California. The majority of our students come from low-income families. Although they come from economically disadvantage homes, my students have so much potential waiting to be tapped into.
My Project
A laptop will not only expose them to the world of technology that is needed to survive in the 21st century. It will offer them the opportunity to explore any subject that they are interested in. Why limit their natural curiosity? Students are always wondering about things all around them and with the proper guidance and with a click of a button a world of information can be theirs.
I am going to teach my students how to navigate the Internet in a safe and productive manner. During our math block, there are students working at different levels. Some finish their work fast while other still need the extra help. Having a laptop can help me differentiate my instruction. The advanced students can work independently on math software programs targeting their specific levels, while I work with the struggling students. The struggling students can practice basic math skills, while I work with the middle or high group.
It does not make sense for students to go through elementary grades and not be proficient in using technology because it is not a priority in the school budget.
My students have what it takes to succeed. Let's not limit their growth and learning because of monetary issues. This hurts our kids, our future, and our economy. Providing technology is a win-win situation for our society.
