This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of our students are from urban low-income communities and face multiple challenges (economic, domestic violence, low performing in academics, parents incarcerated, homelessness, and death of parents). Reading allows our students to escape, gives them hop, and helps them to realize that they too have a voice and a story to tell. At our school, we have developed and relationship with our students and parents and I realize the importance of serving the whole family. My students enjoy reading books when the author looks like them.
My Project
Students will be able to read and have discussions about topics that interest them. These books have pictures that display people that look like my students. Our students are low performing and need to be encouraged to expand their reading skills with topics that will allow their imagination to grow.
This is an awesome opportunity to get our students more active in their pursuit of obtaining an education by providing reading materials that allow them to think outside of the box.
The chosen reading materials will be utilized as tools that will help improve our students' comprehension, self-esteem, and overall improvement in their academics.
