How did you learn what a stop sign meant or what a yield sign meant? Many of the students I work with at the secondary level have trouble with not only academic learning but learning functional life skills as well. Together we can help these children become functional members of our society!
I work at a junior high in Oklahoma and it is a low poverty, Title I school.
Most of the materials to help these students acquire work/life skills are located in the school environment. My students are in serious need of help with life/work skills and these materials will make that difference in their lives.
My Project
I have chosen a plethora of items that all are dedicated developing language and to life skills. I have chosen some language items that will help my students learn the vocabulary needed to enhance their life skills. There are also a couple items that focus on reasoning and problem solving which are probably two of the most necessary skills are living independently and becoming a functional member of society. I have also requested materials that focus on safety in the home and community. All of these resources will help students to develop language skills as well.
This project is important to me because my job is to be a part of a team who helps these children to become successful inside and outside the classroom.
However, children spend most of their lives outside the classroom so the need for life skills is just as important as the need for education.
