Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have big hearts and curious minds, but live in an area with limited fresh food options. I would love to create a special gardening club in which I share my love of gardening while they learn gardening basics. The skills they learn can be used in their own homes, whether they use containers in an apartment setting, or raised garden beds in their yards.
A gardening club will build their confidence, foster healthier eating habits, and show them that they can grow fresh food for themselves and their families.
Our gardening club will increase student engagement and motivation through meeting specific criteria - good grades and behavior - while increasing their reading comprehension and vocabulary.
My Project
This will be a club to encourage students to do their best academically and behaviorally, while showing them some basic gardening skills to share with their families. The requested materials / tools will get them started by providing hands-on equipment used to plant and maintain a garden. Our school already has 2 neglected raised beds in the courtyard, so the only additional things we'll need are soil and seeds.
Gardening skills help foster healthier eating, confidence building, and a community spirit.
As students research plant material, composting, harvesting, etc., they will expand their reading comprehension and vocabulary. They might learn a bit about science, too ;)
