Knocking Down Barriers and Taking Names

My students need a class computer that will allow them to run current educational software. Our current classroom computers are at least 10 years old.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I am.." is a powerful statement that I teach my students. It is defining and allows them to create who they want to be. Using this sentence, they tell the world who they are and what they want to do. We start the day with this statement and use it as our guide throughout the day.

My students are a group of seven young men who are making the transition from a small, self-contained, special education classroom to a larger, general education classroom.

This is the last step for them as they move into a fully integrated, general education setting. I work in an inner city area with a high poverty and high crime rate. My students face many obstacles just to make it so school so everyday that I see them is a success! The young men in my class are intelligent and determined. They understand that they are not defined by any other person's expectations and they strive to become individuals in a world that is ready to group them under a label. They are hardworking and have earned my respect. Everyday, they make me laugh, and they make me proud to be the person that is guiding them through a very arduous phase in their education. They come to school everyday (my attendance rate is near 100%) prepared and excited to learn something new.

My Project

I am requesting a computer for my classroom so my students will be able to access websites and use programs that will help build and strengthen their reading, science and math foundations. Our current computer is ten years old and runs outdated and unsupported software. Many new programs and websites are not accessible using our antiquated hardware and the students become frustrated because of the limitations. My students are technologically savvy and use computers to build simulations and interact with the larger global community. A computer that matches their technological abilities will open up their exploration of their community and the world around them. They will be able to have chats with other students in different parts of the world and they also will be able to work on their coding to create amazing pieces of art and science.

The donations received on this project will open up the world for my students who face a variety of obstacles living in their urban environments.

Their world is so small and can be limited because of fear of violence of their immediate surroundings. Sometimes my students cannot venture out to the library or even down the block due to hazardous living conditions in their neighborhood. Working technology can expand their views and open up possibilities to a world that is waiting for them.
