My students need deep fryers in order to learn this essential skills for working in a real kitchen workplace one day, as well as a NutriBullet to gain exposure to blending fruits/vegetables for healthier snacking options.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come from impoverished communities where resources are scarce. They have special needs and do not graduate from this high school to go on to college; rather, they have to find jobs and begin to support themselves while helping out their families. My school is lucky enough to have a kitchen work site, where students cook lunch for staff and other students to purchase for $5-6 every day. They learn different skills, such as chopping vegetables, searing meat, washing dishes, taking orders, making change in a cash register, and even taking inventory and shopping at Costco for food.
My students need more equipment, as well as some snacks, to help them succeed at this work site where they learn the skills they need for their future.
Additionally, many of my students are emotionally disturbed, and require a very structured learning environment. This includes an organized, well-equipped kitchen work site, where students are consistently actively engaged in the various tasks required for each recipe of the day.
My students need two deep fryers and a NutriBullet. These materials will have a huge impact on the kitchen work site in my school. Students will not only learn to deep fry in a safe environment, which is an essential skill for working in a kitchen one day after they graduate from this program, but they will also learn to counterbalance fried foods with a nutribullet system. They will learn new recipes for combining different fruits and vegetables to institute more positive dietary choices for the staff and their peers. With the new equipment and their new skills, my students will have the confidence they need to keep working and learning in this dynamic work site environment.
