Help me give my students equipment so they can experience science. So what does a dragonfly stove, graduated cylinders, grills, and a pH meter all have in common? Science that is taught through food.
As a teacher in a school where 77% of students come from low-income families, my students face challenges in and out of the classroom every day. Their family situations prevent them from participating in "typical" life experiences.
My students crave hands-on learning and want to broaden their knowledge.
Giving them the life experiences they are lacking will help them break the cycle of poverty and allow them to demonstrate their potential. My hope is to inspire these learners to choose a path of excellence.
My Project
The supplies I am requesting will allow students to experience STEM topics, through food. By giving my students the ability to see science, technology, engineering, and math in their daily life they will be able to conceptualize the topics that they struggle with most.
So how is experiential learning with food merging with science?
They will tackle topics like the Maillard reaction when they grill food, and compare this to food prepared using a sous vide immersion circulator. They will see enzymes in action as proteins coagulate when they prepare cheese. Acids and bases abound in food, and they can test them using the pH meter. Did you say colloids, foams, solutions, and solvents? Yes, food again, and they will understand all of these concepts while making marshmallows and lemonade. Fermentation with kimchi and root beer incorporates those biological concepts, while canning is the antithesis. And the list could go on...
So why not get kids excited about topics they often avoid, by allowing them to experience STEM and eat it, too!
