Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching kindergarten in the time of COVID-19 has brought challenges that I haven't faced in my 26-year career. The pandemic has resulted in so much screen time for kids, and they've forgotten the joy of reading.
My kids are all low-income students in an urban public school.
All of my students are English Language Learners, at risk for school failure without early intervention. My goal is to provide the best possible education for my students at a time when we need to address the whole child and all of their social-emotional needs. I know that they have all experienced trauma as a result of the pandemic and quarantine, so I have done training in Sunshine Circles and play-based learning to help them learn, while also attending to their social-emotional health.
This group of kids loves to hear stories, especially stories about animals. I hope that the child in you will be inspired to donate to this wonderful opportunity for my amazing children. It takes a village to raise a child!
My Project
Students learn so many life skills while they are playing in the dramatic play center. The kitchen area is so popular with kindergarteners, that the toys are always in demand, and get a lot of use.
Our kitchen furniture is broken and not safe for students to use, and needs to be replaced.
The kitchen area is a crucial part of a play-based kindergarten, to give students the opportunity to practice social and emotional skills.
This area is where we hear kids act out real life situations, and using their words to work out disagreements, learning the skills necessary to be successful in life.
