My Students

Our awesome classroom focuses on helping students with moderate to severe disabilities learn the transitional skills necessary to become the most independent versions of themselves as they enter into adulthood. Transition skills include skills in mobility, vocation, independent living, post-secondary education, and self-determination.

What makes our class extra special is how we integrate technology to make the world a more accessible place.

Technology is such a gift to my students. Technology enables the students to access mobility, gives them the ability for expressive communication and more.

Our school is located in a large, diverse urban district. Most of our students come from low-income households. Our transition program as a whole is larger than most- it consists of 13 classrooms that meet all across the city at community sites like community colleges, community centers, and libraries.

Our classroom is largely community-based, meaning we meet in the classroom in the morning and then branch out into smaller groups that travel the city to do things like access jobs and attend specialized classes related to their transitional goals. By learning in the community, my students become better prepared for life outside of the school district as independent, autonomous individuals!

My Project

Making meals for oneself is one of the most beloved skills that our students learn. They enjoy any chance to make food and enjoy the product of their labors! By funding this project, you are giving our students the essential tools they need to be successful in the kitchen. Key tools include: dinnerware, a blender, an inversion burner, baking tools, and tools to clean the dishes.

For adult transition-aged students with moderate to severe disabilities, one of the most important independent living skills to learn is how to prepare their own yummy meals!

Please donate to our kitchen essentials project to give my students the proper tools to cook their own meals with independence!
