Academic integration is the goal. Education needs to make a connection between real life and school work. I teach approximately 200 seventh and eighth grade students Teen Living in a rural, low income community where 2/3 of the student body receives free or reduced lunch benefits.
This grant would allow my students to combine food preservation techniques (canning, freezing, dehydrating, convection, and solar cooking) and chemistry principles into a group of hands-on units of discovery.
Without the requested equipment (a solar oven, dehydrator, pressure canner, apple peeler, convection oven, and 12 pairs of safety goggles) these units of discovery will not be possible.
With this variety of equipment, experiencing chemistry in the kitchen will be an actuality. By using food preservation techniques to reinforce the science/chemistry concepts the students can relate a practical hands-on lessons with their science curriculum. Being from a rural community most of the students and their families have a vegetable garden during the summer. A side benefit to these lessons will be the preservation of food to help with the family’s grocery expenses. If they learn the techniques of preserving food in the classroom they can take that knowledge with them and apply it to their home life.
Lessons that can be implemented utilizing your generous contribution include: Food-Borne Illness: Cause, Effect and Prevention; How Temperature Affects Bacteria Growth; Using Hydration to Show Ratio; The Power of Steam
Convection and Conservation of Energy; and The Sun: a Source of Energy.
We need your help to make this vision possible. Your assistance with this project will ensure that my students make the connection between science and real life. This will be accomplished by giving them a practical application for the standards being addressed in their science classroom.
