I am blessed to have thoughtful and creative students as a part of my nutrition class. Every year I see more and more evidence that they are a part of the fast food and convenience food generation. Fewer and fewer of them learned to cook at home. When they get to take our Food and Nutritional Science class they thrive on the task to create foods from scratch. What a great opportunity to help create independent, mindful students who will learn to prepare their own nutritious meals.
Imagine the majority of your meals came from fast-food restaurants, vending machines, snack bars, and processed wrappers. Now imagine you had a chance in high school to learn to make fresh pasta, homemade cookies, and other meals from scratch.
My high school students love learning to cook for themselves.
Having a chance to work with a stand mixer to whip, mix, stir and then add a pasta-making attachment or sausage making attachment will open doors for even more recipes to be attempted.
Students are learning independent skills, nutritional guidelines, and culinary skills. New equipment would make our learning journey so much more fun!
