Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach sixth grade math at KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy. My students come from low-income backgrounds and have a very long academic day (7:30am-5:00pm) in order to prepare them for the rigors of top high schools. They also attend school for three weeks in the summer and every other Saturday. Fifth and sixth grades at KIPP focus on making up the ground that many of our students have lost in elementary school. One of the weakest areas of my students is their ability to read word problems, as well as visualize concepts. Though I do hands-on activities and create chants to help learn concepts, I would love to incorporate more literacy into my instruction. Marilyn Burns has created an amazing math library of books that explain concepts in creative ways. I would love to use these books for read alouds, as well as allowing my students to read on their own. This math library will help my students become more literate mathematicians and problem solvers. Please help them climb the mountain to college, one math problem at a time!
