Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students typically hear the word "Shakespeare" an immediately groan, but not in my classroom. My students know that the word "Shakespeare" means fun projects, exciting stories with intense themes, and innovative approaches to classic literature.
This is the first year we offer AP English Language, and we are still acquiring supplies and resources for students to use.
Students usually work out of the one textbook we have or photocopies of excerpts of texts. Students need to read whole works in order to analyze and incorporate evidence into essays.
We are a Title I school with over 80% of students on free or reduced price lunch.
Serving a lower socioeconomic demographic has its challenges and often high level reading material is not a priority. My students are challenging themselves and, after having read previous Oscar Wilde plays, they have chosen to raise the level of rigor and read his famous novel.
My Project
My students need a class set of William Shakespeare's King Lear. Students will use the novel to read, discuss, and analyze. Students will use the concepts and themes from the novel to write argumentative essays on various topics relating to the play's themes. The novels will also be used to carry over into other English classes such as AP English Literature and English IV: Honors.
This project will make a huge difference in our classroom.
Our selection of class sets of novels is very limited and teachers are often on a waiting list to use novels with their classes. Increasing the selection with novels from which the students may choose to read will greatly impact their education. Providing high-level texts for students to read will impact their reading level, and it will be reflected in their standardized test scores.
