Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In addition to the curriculum, these kids will spend the year aspiring to be good listeners and clear communicators. My students this year are characters who work hard to distinguish themselves from each other. The struggle is real. They pride themselves on their ability to work together but push each other to also be their best as individuals. I have singers and musicians, artists and actors; I even have a few comedians.
The Guzmanites, as my class is so dearly referred, are a group that is as dynamic as they are diverse.
They will be active participants in our daily learning and will take ownership of what they can control in their environment. My 5th graders are strong and clever, capable of bringing ideas to life in a multitude of ways. I am fortunate to be along for the ride.
My Project
In two raised garden boxes, students will plant and care for the succulent variety we're requesting for our Kindness Garden. Students will have hands on experience and invest themselves in the success of the garden. The intent is to build community and collaboration to last through the school year and beyond. Kindness is a quality that needs to be taught and practiced.
An exercise in creativity and character, it is our intent to share our project with students outside of our class.
Students will use acrylic paints, paint brushes, and paint pens to apply a message or image of what it means to be kind on their smooth rock. An acrylic sealing finish will be applied to protect the rock messages before they are "planted" in the succulent garden.
