Help me give my students books about Kindness, Elephant and Piggie Books, STEM Material, wobble chairs and seat cushions as well as positive reward intensities.
I have 20 exciting and eager-to-learn first graders. My school is a K-8 Gold Ribbon School as well as recently receiving the Title I Academic Achievement award. Our school is the only K-8 school in the district. We received the distinguished award this year due to our excellent programs.
First grade is such an exciting grade.
It's where their beginning reading and writing skills are formed. This is a very crucial stage of their development. First grade is a time of learning not only about academics but about independence and social skills as well. My hope is that by creating an environment that encourages cooperation, taking care of school materials, and managing their own school tools, they will be ready for the challenges of 2nd grade.
They are truly a class full of readers and learners. They love to show kindness each day by being "bucket fillers." We work collaboratively any chance we can, whether with "big buddy" reading, sharing resources, creating our school garden, or celebrating successes. Each student is greeted every morning by our smiling, ready to give a hug, principal and staff members.
My Project
The conventional classroom setting provides rock-hard, tiny blue chairs that don't allow for the natural wiggly-squiggly body of a 6-year old child. When I provide alternative seating, like a Kore chair, the validation and acceptance of their need for movement while learning helps to keep them engaged for longer periods of time. In my classroom, my students need 1 more Kore wobble stools as well as 6 seat cushions. I think it is important for students to have flexible seating and a learning environment that suits their learning styles.
My students will be able to move around and wiggle without disturbing the other students learning.
My students need to be able to learn the appropriate school behaviors as well, like social skills through the use of social stories.
I'm requesting books that teach children the importance of being kind towards others. The characters in the stories can be very repeatable for any student that is worried about starting school. The characters are also very diverse and can help teach about acceptance and kindness. This will help students have clear expectations of behavior in a first-grade classroom. The Elephant and Piggie books will help my students become readers. These books are very child friendly with very few words on each page to not overwhelm beginning readers. Students will be able to learn about expression while reading these stories. Students will laugh at the adventures these two characters go on.
Our science equipment is sorely lacking in STEM activities that engage and excite young minds as well as the materials needed to complete the different STEM/ STEAM lessons.
