I am an elementary school library media tech and Makerspace instructor that is always looking for ways to improve and bring new experiences to our students. Our school's student population is mostly from families with low socioeconomic status. We have many children that don't have the opportunity to spend time at home reading and experience hands-on learning.
Our school is a Title I school and with that demographic of students, they often lack experiences and hands-on learning that other schools may provide.
We have many at-grade level and above-grade-level students, but we also have a large number of students that are below grade level.
Our funding is stretched thin making it difficult to continue to replenish supplies needed for Makerspace learning time.
My Project
I am so excited to bring this project to life for our students. I continually stress the importance of kindness to all my students; we have even created a theme song for our kindness quote of the day.
The supplies that we are in need of to promote kindness will be used as a way to ensure the inclusion of all.
The benches will be buddy benches placed outside as well as inside. The rocks will be used for each student to paint a kindness rock and placed in our outside garden where we get our snacks from. I have a vision of creating a whimsical area for the students and for their rocks to be a part of that. The canvases are for two paintings that I would like to do as a school-wide initiative. The first being a large tree with students using their handprint for the leaves and the saying "Acts of Kindness Make Me Bloom". The second, with the saying "Be the 'I' in Kind" with kind in capital letters and the 'i' missing as that is where a child would stand. The paints and paintbrushes and the needed supplies to complete these projects.
