Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I will be introducing a STEAM program for our school. As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. All of our students receive free breakfast and 90% receive free or reduced-price lunch. Most of my students come from low-income homes and the reading gap starts early because of health problems at birth that slow cognitive, social, and emotional development.
My co-worker and I have a kindness crew that meets once a week to create kindness within our school.
My Project
Kindness crew meets once a week to discuss and plan ways that we as a school community can show kindness. The activities are student driven with only guidance from the staff members. These UNICEF bands will encourage our students, as well as myself, to get more active all while being able to help out locally as well as globally.
Students earn points all while being active and completing lessons.
They can then use those points to support causes in their community.
UNICEF also delivers lifesaving nutrition to malnourished children the more my students move. These bands also encourage teamwork and as 5th graders that are an important skill to learn.
