Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Bullying has become a big problem in many schools and at all grade levels. I'm working hard to combat the problem at my PreK through 4th grade elementary school. The materials in this project will help me continue the battle.
I teach at a high poverty, Title I elementary school in a small town in Texas.
My kindergarten classroom is a great place to be, but is a little more crowded this year. Typically I've had 15-18 students in my class. This year I have 22. It's a challenge teaching 5 and 6 year olds to get along, share, follow directions, and learn so many new things! My whole school is working hard to help our students. We utilize Capturing Kids Hearts and Rachel's Challenge. A few extra materials to reinforce the concepts of these programs would definitely be helpful.
My Project
I am requesting copies of the book Bullying In Schools. These will be provided to teachers, parents, and students old enough to read them. The conflict resolution posters will be used by the counselor and behavior specialist to help any students who are having difficulty with others. I have a Bully-Proof Your Classroom kit and my students love the 'No Bully Zone' sign hanging from the ceiling. I am requesting 7 more kits to share with other teachers in the school. The last thing I'm asking for are magnetic building kits. My kindergarten students are fascinated by magnets. I want to build on this fascination by relating the concepts of repelling and attraction to student relationships. We will use the magnets to examine how a bully 'repels' people away from them, but students who are kind attract friends, who attract more friends, and so on. I know my students will really go for this visual explanation of bullying versus kindness.
Bullying can make a child's school year lonely, sad, and even scary.
With these materials, I can help the teachers and other staff members in my school, to help students feel better, act better, and therefore be better people. Please help me help them.
