Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh grade scholars tackle tough texts daily--texts that sometimes push them beyond what they think they're ready for. But alongside a character analysis of Pygmalion or synthesis of contemporary articles about heroism they also continually reading lots and lots at their current reading level. At our school students read millions of words--a mix of stretch texts together and lots of just right books that students choose for themselves. And all of this work is paying off: my students are leaving on a trajectory for success with all the tough texts that high school will throw their way.

Just right books are magical things.

They hook our students on reading, gently push them forward, help them steadily grow their working vocabulary, and grow their understanding of the world.

My Project

My school partners with the Kindle Classroom Project: we put a Kindle e-reader in the hands of each of our students, networked to one another. Students started the year with access to 100 high-interest books at a range of reading levels. Students can access any of the books at any time--when they need a new copy of a book, they can request one and get it delivered to their Kindle within a day. Students are also the curators of this shared library: the library has grown three times as large in the past year, one student request at a time. However, we were sad to see that for many students this year their reading came to a literal crashing halt when a dropped kindle caused the screen to crack. We need sturdier devices to withstand the challenges of a long year in middle school backpacks.

Help our kids experience the everyday magic of a library at their fingertips.

These upgraded devices break at a rate ten times less than the edition our students used this past year. They provide touch screen and color interface that let our students browse covers. They provide additional read aloud functionality for our most struggling readers. And they allow us to offer a much wider range of graphic novels. With your help our students reading will be on fire this coming year.
