I am a special education teacher, who works in a fourth grade integrated (special education and regular education student) classroom. I teach students who live in a high needs community where around 90% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. They don't have a lot of extra money in their households to purchase reading books. I do what I can by going to tag sales and borrowing books from the library, but right now it's not enough.
There are students in my class who are good readers, but would benefit from an extra push to motivate,as well as enhance and increase their desire to read for pure pleasure. Books help our students to escape from their sometimes very difficult lives. These students become uninterested in reading because they are bored with stories read in class. They can't relate to them. With this in mind, I want to start a book club. To support the endeavor of our book club, it is essential to have sets of stimulating books that the students choose. These books will enhance the readers imagination and capture their attention immediately. The books used during the book club will help to engage students' in an animated environment, which will bolster their desire to keep reading. After all, I'm here to travel with the students on a journey that will encourage them to read for fun and to become life-long readers.
The book club will also be doing book project such as book posters, book reviews, book marks and other exciting challenges. These projects will need art supplies to enhance the students creativity and give them an opportunity to express how and what they felt about books they have read.
With your support, our club will really fulfill a gap that needs to be filled and generate life long curious readers.
