My students are from a little town called Bagdad, Florida. They are inquisitive, excited to learn and ready for any challenge that lays ahead of them. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities, some of who are homeless or in foster care, and many who come from families that serve at our local military bases.
These precious children enter my safe and bright classroom each day excited to learn through a variety of well-planned hands-on centers, small group explorations, and entire class activities.
Through participation in these activities, my kindergartners develop cognitive and social skills, language abilities, as well as acquire a strong foundation in the knowledge and skills for school success.
My Project
The reading area is a cozy spot in our classroom where my students take great pleasure in using a variety of literacy tools and books that go along with the current theme, holiday, or season. My project, Kindles for Kindergarten, will add two Kindle Fire tablets to the reading area. This area needs Kindle Fire tablets so that my boys and girls can listen to books read in an expressive way that not only captures their attention and engages them but also provides a model for fluent reading and an important introduction to listening.
The Kindle Fire tablets will bring the books alive using sound effects, narrators, and music and will allow my students to listen to their favorite stories with a friend anywhere they choose in the classroom quickly and easily.
Listening to stories not only sparks an interest in reading but also teaches that print carries meaning. As they explore page after page, they learn print knowledge while developing reading skills, and expand vocabulary and reading comprehension. The addition of two Kindle Fire tablets will expose my students to the joy of reading and make our reading center the hub of the classroom.
