"I never knew I could think so much!" My students are insatiably curious and absolutely love their newfound skill of close reading - picking apart novels and poems until we find the hidden meaning lurking beneath the surface. In our class, literature is a mystery to solve. As it is a Science Charter School, it has attracted a beautifully diverse student body. Students of every culture, creed, and economic status jump at the opportunity to share their cultures and backgrounds with each other through literary analysis and communication skills. This kind of contribution is invaluable and necessary for the world we live in today.
My Project
I teach an intensive reading course for middle school students who are in extreme need of additional reading/language arts skills. Some students came to me at the beginning of the year not knowing what a paragraph was. For others, English is their second language. A few in the class are "advanced" in that they only need a little extra help in addition to regular class time to be compliant with the standards. With so many aptitude levels in one class, it is difficult for each student to receive the specific curriculum and attention he or she needs to succeed. Kindle Fires will allow me to assign each student reading passages and interactive online activities appropriate for their individual needs. As you can see, I am only asking for two Kindles and cases at this time. This is only phase one of a project that hopefully will result in a Kindle Fire for each student in my course. For right now though, at least two will help get the process started. Thank you for your time!
