My Students
My students this coming school year will be a great group of transitional kindergarten children. I will loop with them and have them for two years, for TK and then kindergarten. I become very attached to them by the end of the second year!
These energetic students are the children of our active duty military Navy and Marines.
They face long separations from their father and/or mother. My students include a variety of ethnic backgrounds, English Language Learners and children with special needs. The majority of them receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
I am requesting two sets of emergent reader books. Each set contains 20 books. Each set has a predictable pattern and lots of sight words. A predictable pattern uses the same simple sentence on each page with only one new word, the word describing the picture. The fiction books have familiar subjects and colorful illustrations. The nonfiction books have full-color photographs that give kids the clues they need to read new words.
"Can we read it again?" They love to hear these familiar books more than once!
We will use these books during our shared reading time when we read it together. This helps students get the skills they need to read in small reading groups and independently. We also talk about the difference between fiction and nonfiction text, which is a common core standard in Kindergarten.
I am also requesting a set of 20 "What's that sound?" word sliders. These sliders help children explore 3-letter CVC words by sliding the slider over one letter at a time so sound out the word. The plastic sliders look like pencils and have an illustration for the word.
All of the resources I am requesting are going to help my students learn to read and I can use them for years to come!
