My students need books with sight words that they can practice with on a daily basis to improve their literacy skills as kindergartners.
This project expired on August 11, 2015.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Welcome to Room 17! Yup, that's us- 24 lively kindergartners with so much potential, and me, their teacher! On a typical day, you can find us working on reading and word knowledge. Although we have daily practice, we still don't have enough books with sight words for students to practice reading!
My school is an inner-city school within California.
My class consists of 24 kiddos who come from various ethnicities, families, and backgrounds. Most of my students have began their educational journey in my class, however, they are a bright and amazing group! On a typical day, my kindergartners can chatty, sociable, and energetic. They enjoy Word study and are very focused when learning- but we are limited in book selections with sight words.
By having the non-fiction sight words books, my students will be able to grow their vocabulary and develop more reading skills. Daily students will be able to check out books, to learn about subjects from science, to social skills, to everyday topics. Students will be able to practice sight-word reading with high-interest books and further their reading levels.
This project will allow all my students who read at Level A (or Level 1) to practice reading sight words in context.
Currently, we only have pre-decodables, and decodables; students are not able to practice reading in various subjects because we don't have any other books with sight words. Thus, these sight words nonfiction readers will give my students access to various subjects while boosting their reading ability!
