My students need OSMO's Hot Wheels MindRacers Game, and math manipulatives to foster counting and cardinality as well as reasoning and cooperation. These are all necessary mathematical skills we strive to develop in all our students.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Listen, think, try", is our classroom motto. Students in my class are taught this motto from day one and quickly learn that it's okay to not know, but it's not okay to not try. For most, this is the first time they've attended school, been with English speaking models, and been required to understand not only a new language but a new school culture as well.
Our school has a high percentage at the poverty level and a high ELD group.
Our school is a small, Title I school with only 500 K-5 students, 4 Pre-K classes, and a state preschool. Parents at this school strive to make education a priority, attending Back to School Night, conferences, and Open House in record numbers.
My Project
Kindergarten students need many opportunities to practice their number sense and counting in real context. I'm asking for materials such as dominoes, dice, and containers to make counting collections for my curious students. Counting Collections is a structured opportunity for children to count a collection of objects. They might count the items one-by-one or skip-count by groups. After children have organized and counted the collection they record how they counted. While students are working the teacher will circulate, observing children’s strategies, problem solving with students, highlighting efficient strategies that are being used, discussing recordings, and supporting partners to work together meaningfully. The OSMO Hot Wheels MindRacers, will help students with strategy building, reasoning, and cooperation as they work with a partner to solve problems.
I strive to get students excited about math and by using Counting Collections, math manipulatives, and OSMO Hot Wheels MindRacers, I can achieve it.
Counting Collections also seeds ideas about how the place value system helps make counting work. Counting Collections is a foundational structure you can come back to again and again.
