Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most kindergartners have no idea that most animals on the planet hatch from eggs! With Arizona school budgets for field trips to farms and zoos cut, the next best learning activities bring animals into classrooms, where students can watch their growth and development in an up-close environment.
My kindergarten class of twenty five students attend a public school in Tucson, Arizona.
Our state no longer funds full-day kindergarten,so parents pay tuition for kindergarten to extend their day. With parents now paying for full-day kindergarten, fewer resources are available for parent donations for science materials. Like most kindergartners, they are so motivated and excited to learn about animals brought into the classroom. They are a wonderful group of bright children that work hard and take care of each other every day.
My Project
With a chicken egg incubation and hatching kit, students will be able to observe the embryo growth of the unhatched eggs for 28 days and then care for the baby chicks. The kit includes an egg candler,which is a light source you hold up to the egg to see growth,fertile chicken eggs, an incubator, chick feeders and waterers,a heat source for the chicks, and teacher's guides. Most of the materials are non-consumable and can be reused by other students in the future.
This science kit will bring the real world of life science into the classroom and will be the foundation of an integrated unit across the curriculum to motivate and engage students in reading and writing, as well as science.

In studying life cycles and working together to care for animals, students will learn about the needs of living things. This project will make a difference in their broader understanding of how life begins for most animals on the planet. Hatching eggs with five-year olds is so much fun! This donation will make a tremendous difference in their kindergarten experience.
